AVC Trading: Australia’s PVC leader

As Australia’s largest importer of PVC, AVC Trading is the first choice for Australian companies that work with PVC. The PVC products that we import include:

  • PVC suspension resin
  • PVC paste resin
  • PVC emulsion resin

We can supply PVC in various resin grades depending on the type of product to be fabricated. The PVC resin that we import from Asia is used to make a wide variety of products for both the domestic and export markets.

AVC Trading has a supply agreement for PVC resin with Formosa Plastics Corporation (FPC), one of the largest manufacturers of PVC in the world. This enables us to supply customers with any quantity of PVC resin that they need, including bulk containers, bulk bags, and 25kg bags. PVC resin is classified as a non-hazardous substance by both the Australian Safety and Compensation Commission criteria and the criteria nominated in transport legislation.

Why choose PVC?

Colourless, odourless, tasteless, and inert in most environments, PVC is a polymer derived from vinyl chloride monomer, a chlorinated hydrocarbon.

In polymerisation, smaller molecules called monomers combine chemically to form large chain-like molecules called polymers. Polymers such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinylchloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and nylon form the basis of many products.

Most traditional plastics are sourced almost entirely from non-renewable, hydrocarbon-based oil products. PVC is 57% chlorine by mass. The chlorine is sourced from common salt, an abundant natural resource.

PVC has many attractive properties that make it the ideal material for a wide range of applications. What makes PVC the go-to choice is its following distinctive properties:

  • Versatility
  • Durability
  • Lightweight
  • Fire resistant
  • Easy to install
  • Low maintenance
  • Relatively low embodied energy
  • Non-toxic
  • Cost competitive
  • Excellent thermal and acoustic properties

Core PVC applications

Over 85% of all PVC consumption in Australia is in the building and infrastructure sectors. PVC is highly durable, making it suitable for long-term applications such as pipes and fittings, cable insulation, floor coverings, window profiles, cladding, and permanent formwork.

PVC products are used in industries that require exacting standards to protect their consumers. For instance, the unique characteristics of PVC make it an ideal choice for manufacturing healthcare products and children’s toys. In healthcare, plasticised PVC products, including flexible tubing, intravenous bags, catheters, and protective gloves are regularly used by practitioners.

Other uses are in short to medium-term applications such as packaging, medical devices, toys, stationery, fashion, and household products. Several performance advantages mean PVC now replaces many traditional materials. Once used, the PVC from certain products, such as cables, can be recycled. Some 2,000 tonnes of shredded PVC from cables is recycled in Australia each year

PVC distribution with AVC Trading

AVC Trading has been importing PVC into Australia from Asia for more than 20 years. And since 2007, when we were acquired by Wesfarmers, we have been importing PVC as part of Wesfarmers’ extensive sea freight operation.

Our PVC resin is delivered throughout Australia by road transport. We monitor all transport operations to ensure they are conducted to the highest safety and efficiency levels. Bulk PVC resin is packaged at the FPC plants in Taiwan, then transported to AVC Trading customers throughout Australia.

Our bulk containers typically contain 18 tonnes of PVC resin. Palletised individual 25kg sacks and 1-tonne bulk bags of resin can also be provided.
