Environment Improvement Plans
|
In a spirit of shared community interest, Australian Vinyls, local residents, council and Victorian regulatory authorities signed the first, jointly agreed Environment Improvement Plan (EIP) for AV’s Laverton plant in 2000. Representatives from the Environmental Protection Authority, City West Water and WorkSafe were participants.
An EIP sets out actions and targets for the company to meet to improve its environmental performance over a three year period. EIPs have been an important part of our program to inform the community about the health, safety and environmental impacts of our business. The second and third EIPs were issued for the Laverton plant in 2003 and 2006 respectively.
The commitments and targets for improvements for the period July 2006 to June 2009 included:
|
- resource conservation
- air emissions
- waste minimisation
- visual amenity
- readiness for incidents
- incident response.

Monitoring
|
Community representatives and Australian Vinyls employees come together to form an Environmental Monitoring Team (EMT). The EMT monitors progress against the actions in the EIP and the environmental performance of the Laverton plant. The team meets bi-monthly.

Moving towards sustainability
|
In 2009, AV and the community finalised a new iteration of the EIP in the form of a Sustainability Plan. While the 2006-9 EIP introduced elements of corporate social responsibility, the new Plan represents a more holistic approach by the company to sustainability.
In addition, the 2009-12 Plan is an important mechanism for articulating the company's commitments as a signatory to PACIA's Sustainability Leadership Framework.
