Use of plasticisers in flexible PVC products - Australian Vinyls

Product stewardship and with plasticisers

AV supports the industry’s Product Stewardship Program commitment in relation to phthalates and we comply with the industry’s Policy on the Use of Phthalate Plasticisers in Flexible PVC Products.

Safe plasticiser use

Australian Vinyls, through its membership of the Vinyl Council of Australia, monitors the international and local scientific debate and assessments regarding the use of phthalate plasticisers. In recent years, these chemicals have received attention in the context of the scientific debate on endocrine disruption and reproductive toxicity because of some effects seen in rodent studies when the animals were exposed to high doses of phthalates.

AV supports the industry’s Product Stewardship Program commitment in relation to phthalates and we comply with the industry’s
Policy on the Use of Phthalate Plasticisers in Flexible PVC Products. This policy includes ceasing the use of a phthalate plasticiser in any application where available scientific evidence shows it to have unacceptable health or environmental impacts.

Australian Vinyls supports the industry’s view that based on its current understanding of the available scientific evidence, including comprehensive risk assessments published recently by the European Union on the major phthalates, restrictions on commonly used phthalates in Australia are not warranted for typical plasticised applications.
