Recycling and PVC products

PVC recycling symbol

When you see this symbol on a product you know that is made from PVC. Part of the Plastic Coding System adopted internationally, the symbol allows waste collectors to sort plastics for recovery and recycling.

Recycling

As part of our responsibilities to oversee all stages of the PVC life cycle, Australian Vinyls supports improved recycling of PVC products. We do this by diverting as much waste from landfill from our operations as is currently feasible; by working with others in the supply chain through the PVC industry’s Product Stewardship Program; and for several years, being involved directly in promoting and facilitating the recovery and recycling of kerbside collected PVC bottles.

Over 80% of the PVC consumed in Australia is used in long-life applications such as building, pipe and cable applications, so recycling volumes for these applications are low since much of this PVC is still in use. Nevertheless, in other areas, particularly consumer products, community standards favour an increase in recycling.

Recycled PVC is used for such products as hoses, matting, flooring, pipe and pipe fittings.
