Product Stewardship at Australian Vinyls
|
The PVC industry’s Product Stewardship Program has some specific commitments which relate to Australian Vinyls’ operations:
|
- All resin produced or traded must have an average residual level of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) of less than 1 part per million (ppm). AV consistently meets this standard. The standard minimises potential exposure to VCM for workers manufacturing products with the resin. The international standard for residual VCM is 5 ppm for general products.
- Total VCM emissions from resin manufacture must be less than 30g per tonne of PVC produced. This benchmark is in line with international best practice. AV’s internal target is for emissions of less than 25g per tonne. We are achieving this.
- Signatories of the PVC industry Product Stewardship Program that are engaged in the packaging supply chain must be signed onto the Australian Packaging Covenant. Australian Vinyls is a signatory to the Covenant.

Our objective is to meet all relevant commitments under the Product Stewardship Program.
We know the general community expects us to take into account the environmental impacts of our business beyond the boundaries of our plant and local communities. As well as the specific commitments designated by the Program, we are addressing the following priority areas of product stewardship:
|
- responsible sourcing of raw materials
- safe storage and transportation of raw materials – especially of VCM
- efficient use of resources, particularly water and energy
- control of resin manufacturing emissions
- responsible use of additives
- impact of end-of-life PVC products.

These aspects of our business are discussed in other sections on this site and in our Sustainability Reports.
