Reporting to the National Pollutant Inventory

The National Pollutant Inventory (NPI) is a government regulated database which provides the community, industry and governments with consistent, reliable information. Data includes the types and amounts of certain chemicals being emitted to the environment. Emissions data covers both industrial and community activities and includes emissions to air, land and water.

Australian Vinyls has been recording emissions of reportable chemicals from its operations annually since 1998–1999.

Most reportable substances relate to combustion processes which take place in the plant as part of normal operations. We also include the emissions of vinyl chloride.

Australian Vinyls, as the sole manufacturer of PVC in Australia, is the largest single-source emitter of vinyl chloride in the country according to NPI data. However, AV’s emissions account for less than one-sixth (approximately 15%) of all vinyl chloride emissions.

Vinyl chloride emissions are recorded at landfill sites; however, these emissions are unrelated to the presence of PVC. The breakdown of a range of chlorinated compounds accounts for the small quantities of vinyl chloride that are estimated to be released from most landfills.
