Safety priorites in PVC production - Australian Vinyls

Regular health checks and monitoring

Monitoring employee safety at Australian Vinyls

Australian Vinyls actively focuses on minimising the risk of exposure of its employees and the nearby community to vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). Levels of VCM in the atmosphere inside the plant are considered safe to workers under the Australian Safety and Compensation Commission standard when the concentration is less than 5 parts per million (ppm) on a time weighted average basis.

Our company sets an internal limit of 1 ppm. A sophisticated analytical system continuously monitors the atmosphere. The monitors provide warning signals if the level of VCM reaches 1 ppm. Should this happen, an action plan is invoked to find the source of the VCM leak and eliminate it.

AV employees at potential risk of exposure are issued with carbon tubes. These allow the company to monitor occupational exposure to VCM from regular readings. Plant employees undergo regular medical examinations as part of Australian Vinyls' occupational health program.
