Community Observes Local Business Emergency Exercise
Members of the local community participated as observers of an emergency response exercise at a Laverton-based chemical plant, Australian Vinyls Corporation Limited. The two locals are members of the PVC manufacturing company’s Environment Monitoring Team and were asked to observe the exercise as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to identifying and resolving safety, health and environmental issues and creating a climate of openness with its community.
Local resident, Mr John Elso, said of the exercise, “I was impressed with the professionalism shown, especially the quality of the debriefing afterwards. This shows the company is looking after its employees and the community.”
The exercise conducted in March was one of eight the plant voluntarily conducts every year to ensure it has the equipment and capabilities to respond to an emergency. The exercise demonstrated that the team was able to identify, resolve and clean up the incident well before the issue would have extended beyond the plant boundary. There were some further enhancements to current approaches and equipment suggested by the response team and the community members, which will be actioned in the next few months.
