Australian Vinyls releases second annual Sustainability Report

Australian Vinyls released its annual Sustainability Report on progress the company made during 2006-07 in moving towards its sustainability goals.
The report identifies the company's long term goals as:

- zero injuries,
- zero vinyl chloride emissions,
- zero fresh water use in manufacturing,
- continued steps towards carbon neutrality, and
- the supply of products which contribute to a more sustainable downstream industry and society.

During 2006-07, Australian Vinyls further reduced its energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Emissions of vinyl chloride to air and water remain well below the stringent, company standard of no more than 30g per tonne of PVC produced.
As a result of a project initiated by employees during the year, the company achieved a nine per cent reduction in fresh water consumed in manufacturing.
However, the report notes Australian Vinyls' disappointment with the rise in the company's injury rate per 200,000 hours worked in 2006-07. This was the result of three injuries.
"We are deeply committed to affording our employees a safe working environment," General Manager Commercial, Mark Scatena and General Manager Operations, Michelle Ash, state in the report, "and to this end, we are committed to increasing our focus on injury prevention programmes and the improved implementation of our safety management systems."
As in previous years, the report has been independently verified. NetBalance Management Group, who conducted the assurance process, is satisfied that the report is a fair and balanced representation of the company's material environmental and social performance during 2006-07.
