New Environmental Commitments Agreed

Local PVC manufacturer, Australian Vinyls Corporation, today confirmed its ongoing commitment to improving environmental performance by signing a new three year plan developed with the local community.

The company launched its third Environment Improvement Plan at a signing ceremony including representatives of the local community, the Wyndham City Council and regulatory authorities: the Victorian EPA and City West Water.

Chief Executive Officer of Australian Vinyls, Mr Murray Winstanley said, “This latest three year plan commits the company to continue reducing the environmental impact of its operations, and forms an important part of our programme to inform the community with respect to the health, safety and environmental impacts of our business.”

The Plan contains a series of commitments and improvement targets for the period July 2006 to June 2009, including resource conservation, air emissions, waste minimisation, visual amenity and incident preparedness and response.

Commenting on these Mr Winstanley said, “The themes of water conservation and greenhouse gas emissions provide major challenges. With respect to water conservation, we have reduced consumption by about 300 million litres. The challenge now is to reduce current consumption by a further 50%, and not constrain our ambitions to only small improvements in the future.

“For the first time,” said Mr Winstanley, “we have included specific actions in the area of corporate social responsibility, while at the same time maintaining our commitments to engage with the community and to be a responsible steward of our products.”

The Plan was developed by Australian Vinyls in consultation with the community and regulatory authorities who, together with company representatives, constitute the company’s Environment Monitoring Team.

At the signing ceremony, Mr Winstanley signed the new Environment Improvement Plan together with members of the Team.

The two previous Environment Improvement Plans, covering the period 2000-2006, contributed to the company’s success in reducing energy consumption by 19%, water consumption by 28% and greenhouse gas emissions by 22%, over that period.

Australian Vinyls is Australia’s only manufacturer of PVC resin, a polymer used in a wide range of products such as pipe and fittings, cable insulation, floor coverings, packaging, automotive applications, profiles, furnishings and fashion products. The company employs approximately 100 people at its Laverton and Altona sites.
